LIZARD LOVE
BITES

Imagine
my surprise to find a pair of lizards in my garden,
greeny-brown anoles twisting and biting each other in
the act of passion. I have never in my life seen this
sight before and I was grateful to have my camera with
the super zoom lens in hand.
At first I thought that the pair of anoles were
fighting, but after talking to my neighbours I was soon
informed that it was spring and these lizards were in
love. As it turns out, the sexual organs for lizards are
under a flap at the base of the tail. And, while other
members of the animal kingdom can mount their mates from
behind, our loving lizards have to approach each other
from the side. The male lizard must bequeath his
belovered with bites in order to position his lover as
close to him as possible.
I was out taking photos of flowers to email to my
friends and to study for my flower power art - when
I stumbled upon this pair of playmates. I stopped dead
in my tracks and kept the camera zooming and zooming and
auto focusing, as I every so slowly, stepped closer to
the copulating couple.
As you can see, my photographs have captured with
clarity the love bite that drags the female close to the
male in their bonding ritual. His little lizard face is
so full of determination and hope. The female is basking
in all her feminine beauty as she is dragged closer to
her lover. It is so romantic in a fauna sort of way.
I hope that their lovemaking will produce a cascade of
little loving lizards full of leaping lust - for many
generations to come.
