BUSINESS IS LIFE AND LIFE IS BUSINESS
by Karla Darocas

Self-education
and self-discipline are both key components to keeping your head above the red
line.
Entrepreneurship is about being smart simply because good-looks won't pay the
bills, unless of course your independent enterprise is in high fashion
photography or escort services.
What skills are vital to being an entrepreneur, besides being a good sales
person?
1. You need to be able to read and write fluently. If you cannot read and write,
then go back to school and learn from the ground up. If you cannot read, you
will make costly mistakes and if you cannot write, you will not be able to
achieve a multitude of business endeavors from writing press releases, contracts
and general letters to clients. Reading opens up the mind and generates quality
information, ideas and creative solutions. Read everything you can get your
hands on. For example, if I want to know what colour to design a business
brochure or website, then I read Vogue magazine. I like to know what is hot in
the fashion world to help guide me to make better business designs.
2. Become an observer and not a talker. The old saying, "doers do - and talkers
talk", is so true. Unless you make your living by giving lectures or you are a
standup comedian, then stop the talk and learn to watch. By observing you can
learn plenty about your clients, from their body language and how they respond
to you. Learn to observe how others are pitching their products and services and
of course, watch how people respond to your products and services when at
tradeshows or from across the showroom sales floor. The powers of observation
are the cornerstone of the inquiry process. It begins an investigation that can
ignite into a new business venture. I am always telling my business students to
"look for the holes in the marketplace, and then fill them". If you can't see
what is missing - then your powers of observation are not tuned in.
3. Research, research, research and make notes. It is good practice to carry a
notebook with a pen attached to it with a bit of string and jot down everything
and anything that inspires you and that can be applied to your business.
Research other businesses in your area, your competition, your genre. Research
human behaviour and buying trends. Research locations, events past and present
and research yourself. Make notes about your character and see if you have all
the "right stuff" to be an entrepreneur and fun a successful enterprise.
Remember that the word business is just a root word for a state of being - a
state of being "busy" - hence "busy-ness" or business!
If you can keep busy doing something that you love, then you are half way there.
Many people take their hobbies and turn them into a business.
If you are not busy at what you are doing - then 99.9% chance your business is
not right for you!

ATTENTION: GLOBAL BUSINESS & ECONOMIC STUDENTS
THE
PROPERTY-PRENEURS
An undeniable, universal truth is that we all need
someplace to live. No matter at what age, we all seek to
find a place to hang our hats, raise a family, have a
holiday, or to retire. And, as long as this irrefutable
truth exists, there will be “property-entrepreneurs” who
will design your home, your community and your
lifestyle, if given the chance.
THE
GREEN-ENTREPRENEURS
The
industrial revolution has peaked and now it is
up to the “green-preneurs” to bring business
back on track with sourcing, developing and
marketing products and services that “help”
Mother Nature instead of controlling her.
