IS
YOUR WEBSITE DESIGNER HOLDING YOU HOSTAGE?

Over the past months, I
have heard a lot of horror stories about business
professionals, independent and large firms, who have not
researched their website developers before they signed
the work contract and now they find themselves and their
websites being held in limbo.
The truth is – web
development isn’t some magical art, it is a skill that
any man, woman or child can learn. However, unlike any
other skilled trade – it isn’t licensed and that means
that there are not standards nor regulating authorities.
In conclusion, the warning is, “buyer beware”, as not
all web developers are created equally.
Some website developers feel that because
they designed your site, that they should have some kind
of license over your site. Thereby, if you should ever
become dissatisfied with your web developer, they may
"hold your site hostage," making it difficult for you to
transition to a new developer.
Before this happens, draft a simple
contract that states that you are indeed the owner of
your website and that you paid for your domain name and
your hosting, and for the design work contracted to the
developer. Also, in the contract, make sure that you are
provided with a digital copy of your site.
Often, web developers will offer to host
your website on their server and you might think that
this is a great offer. In fact, this isn’t a good idea
because if your relationship with your designer goes
“sideways”, then it is easy for your website developer
to hold your website hostage.
It is better if you source and buy your
own hosting package from a third party location or from
the source where you bought your domain name. You should
only be paying about 40-50 euros per year for hosting.
Your domain name registration should only be about 7
euros per year.
Web developers come and go. You'll want
to trust your website with a developer who has built a
strong reputation and has proved that they will be
around to grow with your business. It is best to
“google” the name of the developer and see what comes
up. If nothing comes up – you might want to reconsider
your choice.
Learning to build your own website is the
maximum way to make sure that you are in control at all
times. Smart business owners have learned that websites
are a very important part of their business and
marketing strategies. There are no other marketing
mediums that are as strong visually and as far reaching
as websites.
Learning to build your own website will
take about 10 hours and give you the power to make the
right decisions for your business.

Any other positive ideas on this subject?

ATTENTION: GLOBAL BUSINESS & ECONOMIC STUDENTS
THE
PROPERTY-PRENEURS
An undeniable, universal truth is that we all need
someplace to live. No matter at what age, we all seek to
find a place to hang our hats, raise a family, have a
holiday, or to retire. And, as long as this irrefutable
truth exists, there will be “property-entrepreneurs” who
will design your home, your community and your
lifestyle, if given the chance.
THE
GREEN-ENTREPRENEURS
The
industrial revolution has peaked and now it is
up to the “green-preneurs” to bring business
back on track with sourcing, developing and
marketing products and services that “help”
Mother Nature instead of controlling her.
